Purses were initially used by early modern Europeans, both men and women, for carrying coins. Made of leather or soft fabric, they were always very small in size. During the industrial revolution in England, increased railway travel led to the demand for larger sized handbags as purses were too small and the materials were not durable enough for the journey.
